Chocolate City
This design represents the current culture of D.C. for many native Washingtonians. D.C. was once coined as chocolate city, due to its overwhelming population of black residents with over 70% of the population. That figure has now dwindled down to 45%, with constant changes taking place in the city.
Chocolate City
Modeled after the Mr. Goodbar, this design highlights the changes happening in the place once known as ‘Chocolate City’; changes that have many asking, “What happened to all the black people?”
On the surface you will see ‘Chocolate City’ emboldened in a bright red font. This will be a point of nostalgia for many as D.C. owned this moniker for decades due to its high concentration of black residents and culture. When you look closer you will be brought to D.C’s current reality.
“Now with 30% less chocolate!”
“Made with chocolate and gentrification”
A number of changes have been made within the landscape of the city. Changes that have many residents asking, “were these made for me?” The purpose of this design was to create a dialogue on D.C. culture, and create something that would highlight how people feel about the current state of their city.
